NOTE

A while back I compiled the below charts for a post on the subject of X-Men Collected Editions. The post became one of my most frequently viewed, so I decided to make the chart a permanent page on the blog, to be updated as needed when new books are announced.

The following tables list all issues of both UNCANNY X-MEN and X-MEN collected in full color, beginning with UNCANNY #94 (the debut of the all-new, all-different X-Men) and ending with UNCANNY #350/X-MEN #69 (Scott Lobdell's final issues as writer). Items in red are, obviously, not yet collected. You may notice that there are other editions containing these stories -- Marvel's Epic Collections, for example, cover certain ground that's also covered by the books below -- but these are my personal and preferred editions. I always go for hardcover where possible, so the tables favor that format any time it's an option.

It should be noted, for those who are interested, that all issues of UNCANNY X-MEN prior to issue 94 are collected as well, in both hardcover and paperback Marvel Masterworks, as well as two THE X-MEN Omnibus collections.

Lastly, every book title listed below contains a direct link to Amazon.com for those interested in purchasing any of these volumes.

Beyond the initial goal, for those who would like to see the entirety of the nineties collected (and to some extent I would be on board with this), we have the period immediately after Lobdell's departure, which featured about a year of Steve Seagle and Joe Kelly on the core X-titles, followed by a year-plus of Alan Davis plotting all the stories with various scripters, and then a year or so of Chris Claremont back on the series he had made famous, writing both titles with less-than-stellar results, before Scott Lobdell returns to put a bow on the pre-Grant Morrison X-Men with the "Eve of Destruction" crossover:

  1. Hey, cool list. I'm fairly sure that.....

X-Men: Operation Zero Tolerance HC collects X-Men #70

    Avengers / X-Men: Maximum Security Tpb collects Uncanny X-Men #387, X-Men #107

    1. Thanks, Jacob. I'm not sure how I missed issue 70 in the O:ZT collection! I will also list the other two trades you mentioned when I have a moment to update my tables. I knew about the "Dream's End" collection, but somehow I missed that they had published the full "Maximum Security" event in one trade!

    2. I was about to make this list myself and here it is already, thank you! Like you, my X-Men are represented in 94-350. The beginning and end of my initial off-the-stands run as a kid was 288-361, roughly Lobdell's run, and during that period I bought backwards to 94 in various formats. I really love From the Ashes and am excited to see that coming up in the masterworks line.

    1. Great, time to update the list! And I know beggars can't be choosers, but I really wish this upcoming Masterworks could've included issue 176, as did the old FROM THE ASHES trade. It's the start of John Romita, Jr.'s run, but it's really an epilogue to the Madelyne/Mastermind storyline. Oh well...

  4. Hi,
Just wanted to congrat you for the list, I tried many times to do something like this, but never managed do do it as clear as you did! My goal is the same as yours but I'll try to read in sequence spin off titles as well (New mutants, X-Factor, X-Force, Excalibur...).
Oh and don't hesitate do update your shelf picture, it looks great!

    1. Thanks for reading! I have much less comprehensive charts for some of the spin-offs, but this one alone is a chore to maintain, so I doubt I'll convert the rest to the blog. But, just for example, did you know that there are only twelve issues of NEW MUTANTS uncollected in one form or another?? I was really impressed when I figured that out.

I'll probably update the photo when I receive the INFERNO PROLOGUE volume in a few months.

  5. Well, a listing for X-MEN: THE ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT, vol. 3 has appeared courtesy of the Hachette Book Group. This is exciting news for a few reasons:

One, the book is coming. Marvel's commitment to finishing series is usually pretty good, but in this day and age you never know for sure. But it appears this volume should be along in the first quarter of 2015.

Two -- Per the (so far unofficial) solicitation blurb, this volume collects UNCANNY issues 329 - 332 and X-Men 50 - 52, among other one-shots, mini-series, etc. Note that previously, there was a one-off trade called PRELUDE TO ONSLAUGHT, which collected X-MEN 50 (but not 51 - 52) and UNCANNY 333 (but not 329-332).

Now, the fact that this volume will include an issue that was already in PRELUDE TO ONSLAUGHT makes me think that Marvel is disregarding that previous trade in favor of these new collections. But then, why isn't UXM 333 squeezed into this volume, too? There's really nothing else to collect with it for a ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT vol. 4. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but all I can think is that they must be planning to put 333 into an ONSLAUGHT OMNIBUS -- one of my most-desired books.

Time will tell if I'm right, but given that "Onslaught" is really the only remaining X-Men event from the nineties not to have received an oversized hardcover reprint at this point, I have high hopes that I'm correct.

    1. Oh, additionally, for those who aren't interested in the Omnibus or the old "Complete Epic" trades, it appears that Marvel is reprinting "Age of Apocalypse" again in a new series of trade paperbacks.

      Delete
  6. Impressive. Most impressive (not just for the accumulation of the list, but the formatting of it on the page. Seriously).

The only thing I have to add is that the "Old Soldiers" paperback collects UXM #215 (and maybe even the non-Davis-drawn issues after it, I can't remember), though I think that's out of print, so maybe you excluded it for that reason.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks! The formatting is a huge pain to deal with, which is the main reason I don't want to create similar charts for the other X-series, though I have them in spreadsheet format.

I was aware of the OLD SOLDIERS volume but I chose not to include it since it's more like a "best of" book than a collection of consecutive issues. It only includes Claremont/Davis collaborations, as it was released to coincide with their return to UNCANNY (Which somehow happened ten years ago already!).

At any rate, there may be random single issues that aren't listed up there for this reason. All the "Lifedeath" stories, as well as some other Storm/Forge stuff, came out in an eponymous collection a few years ago, but I didn't include that either since it skips around the timeline. I'm mainly interested in books that include large chunks of ongoing continuity, and generally the only single issues you'll see above are included as parts of those books (UXM #306 in PHALANX COVENANT or 315 in FATAL ATTRACTIONS, for example).

There are, however, cases where single issues are "grandfathered in" on the list, such as UXM #318 in GENERATION X CLASSIC vol. 1 and #319 in the AGE OF APOCALYPSE prelude -- the reason being that previously, those books were the only way to get the full "Generation Next" and "Legion Quest" storylines, but those crossovers have been supplanted on my lists by hardcovers.

Hopefully that all makes sense. The above is basically my preferred way to own all these issues in collected edition formats, and does not include certain collections which I don't own/am not interested in owning.

  7. Yessss... We have an Amazon ghost listing for an ONSLAUGHT OMNIBUES due out next summer! No word on what it contains, but I couldn't be more excited to see this dream come true. Note the clever co-branding, calling it an "X-Men/Avengers" book to capitalize on the Avengers' current insane popularity.

Also, a dip in the Seagle/Kelly era (I assume) with a volume collecting the HUNT FOR PROFESSOR X storyline.

  8. Just wanted to thank you for this list. This has been such a lifesaver and is now the basis for me pursuing to collect these books that I grew up reading! Any chance of continuing the list to reflect the current/latest storylines with collected editions? Thank you so much again!

    1. Thanks, glad to be of help. However I'm afraid I won't be including the more recent stuff. The X-Men, post 2000 or so, just don't hold very much interest for me. But I appreciate your interest!

    2. Perfectly understandable. A lot of the more current story arcs and even the art in my opinion don't live up to the books that your list comprise of. So thanks again for this list!

    2. Thanks! I've been trying to find the contents of THE GIFT Epic Collection, but so far I've had no luck. I'll add it to the above when I have a moment. Do you mind letting me know where you saw that? Amazon still doesn't seem to list the issues.

As for the Joe Mad Visionaries book, you're correct. Pretty much all the things I've got listed above are full chunks of sequential issues, with very few exceptions (UXM 318 being in GENERATION X book, for example -- though technically that book does contain a sequential run of GEN X issues, I guess). I ignored things like Visionaries books and, for example, the OLD SOLDIERS trade paperback, which reprinted all of the classic Claremont/Davis issues, therefore including UXM 215 but nothing else missing from the above list.

I'm pretty sure we'll see 215 - 219 collected in full at some point down the line, maybe as part of a a FALL OF THE MUTANTS PROLOGUE book or something. Likewise, Marvel would be crazy not to reprint all the old Joe Mad stuff. Personally, I'm holding out hope for a couple of ROAD TO ZERO TOLERANCE trades, similar to the ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT books they just finished releasing.

Although, since UNCANNY and X-MEN were pretty well separate starting shortly after "Onslaught", when half the team went into space, maybe something like:

X-MEN: THE ROAD TO ZERO TOLERANCE (or X-MEN: ONSLAUGHT AFTERMATH depending on how they want to brand it) - Collecting UNCANNY X-MEN #338 - 340 and X-MEN #58 - 64.

      X-MEN: INTO THE VOID (or X-MEN: THE TRIAL OF GAMBIT) - Collecting UNCANNY X-MEN #341 - 350 (or 341 - 345 & 347 - 350 since 346 is already in the "Zero Tolerance" hardcover).

That's an 11-issue collection and a 10 issue collection, bridging the gap. Of course Marvel likes to throw in annuals, one-shots, X-MEN UNLIMITED issues, and all the rest when they do these things, so my first volume would likely wind up being split into two or so. The second seems simple enough as-is, however, since the space team was on their own track that whole time and didn't show up anywhere else.

Anyway, that's how I'd like to see it done. I would vastly prefer this over reprinting UXM 341 - 350 in the same books as the X-MEN issues from the same time. That would result in a really disjointed experience.

    Includes: POWER PACK (1984) 40, 42-43; X-FACTOR (1986) 33-36; X-TERMINATORS 1-4; UNCANNY X-MEN 239-240; NEW MUTANTS (1983) 71-72

    1. Thanks, Rafael. I'm going to keep the OHC on my list above since, though it's intended for information purposes, this is really my preferred method to own all this stuff. I'm glad Marvel's doing it in trades for those who prefer that format over the hardcovers (they did "Fall of the Mutants" in two trades last year, too).

As far OHCs go, though, the AGE OF APOCALYPSE OMNIBUS is going back to press next year, so perhaps we'll see some of the other major crossovers in OHC format again someday as well.

  14. love the list but i would love it even more if you had alternate lists which include other books that also include listed issues. for example instead of the claremont/lee omni, gambit classic contains uncanny 265-267. for people who already own this book it would be nice to see all new and all different ways to collect the rest without having to buy an omni which already includes issues that people may already own...

    1. Hi, Unknown -- I have given some thought to expanding this list to include alternate collections, but I haven't for a couple reasons:

One, this is really my preferred way to read all this stuff. I'm not saying my way is the right way or the only way, but simply that this is, for my purposes, the "definitive" way.

And two, this table is a pain to manage. Adding new rows and cells for alternate collections would take way more time than I want to invest in this little project!

Still, you never know when I could change my mind and decide the extra effort is worth it.

  15. Hay Matt. Have you thought about expanding up to All new?

    1. Sorry, no. The X-Men pretty much ended for me around 2000 or so. There have been bits and pieces I've enjoyed since then, but I have no real interest in trying to sort out what's what following the conclusion to "Eve of Destruction".

(Honestly, I have little interest in X-Men after the end of the Alan Davis run, but I included the "Revolution"/"Eve of Destruction" era up there since I think that makes for a nice cutoff between the classic and modern eras.

  16. hey matt. if someone else gives you the expanded list would you format it nice and pretty like you have here? i have the complete finished run (up to 544) from eve of destruction on and would have no problem emailing you the list or posting it here...

    1. Bob -- Apparently I never responded to this! I appreciate the offer, but the above table was a nightmare to put together in HTML, plus I'm really not all that interested in the post-2000 X-Men. Someone else out there may put something like that together, but I'm afraid it won't be me.

  17. Hey Matt,

There's a ghost listing for "Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 10 HC" on Amazon! Check it out if you're interested!

Jacob (i.e. the first commentator on this page)

P.S. I noticed in your fourth chart down (under "X-MEN", "THE J. KELLY/S. SEAGLE/C. CLAREMONT/A. DAVIS ERA") you have listed, "70 - 79 UNCOLLECTED." To be completely accurate though....issue #70 is collected in X-Men: Operation Zero Tolerance HC. Thanks man, I love your list! I still reference it on a regular basis!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Jacob. I could've sworn I had updated X-MEN 70 as being in OZT, but I guess not. I will add that and the upcoming Masterworks volume soon as I have some time to do so.

Now the real question -- do I pick up that Masterworks? I'm not a massive fan of the John Romita, Jr. era and I could easily wait for it to hit the Epic Collection format instead, saving myself a few dollars in the long run... or I could just suck it up, buy the book -- which will almost certainly cover issues 176 - 188 -- and be done with that glaring gap sooner rather than later!

      Decisions, decisions.

      Delete
    2. The October 2016 Marvel Solicits have Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 10 HC collecting "UNCANNY X-MEN (1981) #176-188, MAGIK (1983) #1-4 and material from MARVEL FANFARE (1982) #40." I don't think the Magik mini-series has been collected in a Marvel Masterworks before (It was, however, collected in the recent Omnibus Vol. 3).

I haven't read the Romita Jr. era yet. I do like the idea of closing the gap sooner rather than later, but I'm holding out for (possibly?) a Claremont/Romita Jr. Omnibus spanning Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 10 (minus the Magik mini), X-Men Epic Collection: The Gift, and X-Men: Ghosts......with X-Men: Asgardians Wars thrown in for good measure. What do you think Matt? Do you think the page count would be too high to make this omnibus idea feasible??
(If not, I would say....hold out for the omnibus!)

      Jacob

      Delete
    3. You're right; MAGIK was in the Omnibus and it had its own Premiere Classic Hardcover and subsequent trade paperback release, but it's not been in Masterworks format yet. Interesting that the Omnibus collects it around where it would've taken place chronologically, while the Masterworks collect it closer to where it was published.

I would definitely expect an UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS volume 4 at some point, but my guess is we won't see it for a few years, until after some more UXM Masterworks are published.

It looks like UXM Masterworks 10 will be 456 pages. THE GIFT Epic Collection is 512 pages, and the GHOSTS trade paperback is 360 pages. That's 1,328 pages, plus you would need to add in the two "Asgardian Wars" annuals since they aren't in any of those collections, bringing us up to roughly 1,400 pages. At one time, the SPIDER-MAN BY ROGER STERN OMNIBUS was the biggest book Marvel had ever published, coming it at around 1,300 pages. The ONSLAUGHT OMNIBUS is also right around there. So I could potentially see a 1,400-pager happening, but I don't know if Marvel would go that route since the previous three UXM Omnibuses were all right around 900 - 1,000 pages each. Seems more likely to me that the JR jr. era would be broken into two books, with the latter half joining the beginning of Marc Silvestri's run in UXM Omnibus 5.

      Delete
  18. Beside the Omnibus, does anyone know if there's a book or books containing the issues found the in the Marvel Masterworks Volume 3? I have 1,2, and 4, so I don't really want to rebuy stuff I've already got, but I can't seem to find MM3 for under $100, even though 1,2,4, and even 5 are all out there for less than $20.

    1. Hi Adam -- I was going to suggest the paperback version of UNCANNY MASTERWORKS vol. 3, but I see that thing has skyrocketed in price. Unless I'm mistaken, at this point the Omnibus may be the only option in color. The ESSENTIAL X-MEN books are still out there for bargain prices if you don't mind black-and-white, but even then you would need two volumes (1 & 2) to get all the issues you're after.

So you may be stuck waiting. The Claremont/Byrne run is pretty evergreen, and I'm sure Marvel will continue to keep it in print. Those issues would be great for an Epic Collection, too. So far the only X-Men Epics have covered the sixties and the eighties; I think we're due for something from the seventies!

    2. You're right - X-Men Epic vol 5 is coming in April 2017, covering the contents of the first two UXM Masterworks plus a few extras. (An eventual vol 6 Epic would pick up right where Adam wants but would almost certainly duplicate some or all of the vol 4 Masterwork he already owns.)

    3. Thanks for mentioning the Epic, James -- I hadn't seen it yet. And as usual, Marvel continues to frustrate me! This book includes the MARVEL TEAM-UP 2-parter with the Living Monolith and the final two IRON FIST issues with Sabretooth and the X-Men, which were all skipped over in the Omnibus series. Now I may wind up buying this material for like the fifth time to get all that stuff in once place...

  19. Thank you so much for authoring and maintaining this informative post! I've referenced it often over the past couple years as I built my UXM and XM collections from Claremont through most of Nicieza (Onslaught is my self-imposed cutoff point).

Anyway, I was hoping to give back in a small way by letting you know that the upcoming X-Men Origins: Gambit TPB will include X-Men #33, the middle issue of the uncollected 31-35. Hope this helps! :)

    1. Thank you for the kind words, James, and for the info about the Gambit trade. I don't usually bother with books that collect single issues piecemeal like that, but given this gap has been sitting there for so long, I may need to add that one.

  20. The entire Claremont era is collected in the Marvel Essentials. Although the last few volumes are harder to hunt down for some reason (volumes 10 & 11) and the cross hatching makes looking at the art difficult in black and white, the earlier stuff is great! Getting the entire Byrne and Claremont run for $9.99 as a kid after hearing so much about the hoopla from Wizard was definitely satisfying.

    1. Thanks, Eric! My above list is specifically for color collections (and even more specifically for the versions of the books I favor most), but I do like that Marvel got it all out there in black and white too.

    1. I passed on this Masterworks volume. The JR Jr. era is where I start to lose interest in Chris Claremont's X-Men. I don't think I'll grab it in Omnibus format, either -- I'll just wait for an Epic Collection to cover that material. I have most of Jr.'s run in the THE GIFT Epic and the GHOSTS trade, so another trade will be the way to go for me, for that material.

    1. Thank you, J.J.! I did see they had that book coming, but I wasn't sure about putting it on my list either. I may go ahead and add it though, since people seem to really like the CLASSIC X-MEN backups. I know many readers consider them the height of Chris Claremont's work with the characters. And more power to those people, but I personally don't really get it. Weird as it sounds, I'm actually more excited for this Omnibus because it will feature the new pages that were inserted into the original stories! The stuff added to Dave Cockrum's issues was drawn by Cockrum himself and I want to see it.

  23. I need to find time to update my chart, but there's some good news for nineties X-Fans coming next year: Marvel is completing the Joe Kelly/Steve Seagle run by way of two trade paperbacks, one collecting Kelly's X-MEN and one collecting Seagle's UNCANNY, up to the start of the already available HUNT FOR PROFESSOR X volume.

Also, it looks like the AGE OF APOCALYPSE PRELUDE trade will be rendered obsolete by a LEGION QUEST hardcover volume featuring more ancillary issues! I'll try to do an in-depth review of that one when it comes out, to go with all my other X-Men collected edition reviews. I'm finally okay with the fact that I've never bought the (by all reports sub-par) AOA PRELUDE book over all these years!

  24. Hey Matt any word on the name of those Kelly/Seagle books? Having a hard time finding ANY info on them online... Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work!

    1. Yeah, I should've been clearer because they're really weird. Marvel is taking an odd route with these, for some reason (I guess maybe to encourage sales) tying them in with the trades that collect the new X-MEN BLUE and X-MEN GOLD series. So they're called:

      X-MEN BLUE VOLUME 0: REUNION
      X-MEN GOLD VOLUME 0: HOMECOMING

I put Amazon links to both up above. They have solicit blurbs but no cover art at the moment.

  26. hello Matt, I saw recently in Amazon the Legion Quest Hardcover which I guess will be oversized.

But I saw that some Uncanny X-Men and X-Men issues that are already contained in AoAOmni will be printed again for this collection, do you think they will realise that we will have double printed comics in those collections and correct that issue or they just do not care about it? It already happened with the x-tinction agenda Hc

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would skip this Legion quest omnibus as it will have some issues contained in other HCs but as I'm a completion guy I need the 4 or 5 "new" issues it will print... will you buy it based on this or will you skip it? what is your opinion on this?

    1. Hi Enls, thanks for the comment! I do believe the issues listed in the solicit for the LEGION QUEST book are correct. The issues duplicated from the AGE OF APOCALYPSE OMNIBUS are the actual chapters of "Legion Quest" itself, so I can't imagine them leaving those out of a volume with that very title. And for me, there's enough stuff in the LEGION QUEST book that isn't in the AoA book that it's worth it for me.

However, there's also the AGE OF APOCALYPSE PRELUDE trade paperback, which presents much of the same material as LEGION QUEST. If I had that trade, I might think twice. LEGION QUEST has one extra issue of UNCANNY and one extra issue of X-FACTOR that aren't in the AoA PRELUDE -- but it also includes three issues of X-MEN UNLIMITED and an X-MEN ANNUAL which, to my knowledge, aren't collected anywhere else.

As far as why they're duplicating contents -- my guess is they wanted to tie it in with the LEGION TV series, which returns to TV early next year, close to the release of this book. "Legion Quest" is a storyline -- possibly the only storyline -- named for the character, so Marvel probably figured giving it its own hardcover would serve the dual purposes of promoting the show and collecting other "orphaned" X-issues from the same era.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for your reply Matt and please keep up the great work on this.

Yeah, you probably are right about Marvel wanting to cash in with the release of the Legion Show. And I am probably going to buy it no matter if I'll have duplicated issues haha.

      Cheers

  28. Hey bud, there has been an announcement, the X-Men Revolution Omnibus by Chris Claremont, featuring issues at the very tail end of your chart. Any interest in that one? Any interest in the Classic X-Men Omnibus?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hello Matt, I just saw one new release in about two weeks this December and two new releases for 2018 (all X-Men related):

    -X-Men Classic Omnibus
COLLECTING: Backup stories and new pages from Classic X-Men #1-44; material from Marvel Fanfare (1982) #60

    ---------------------------------------------------

    -X-Men: Dark Phoenix Saga Omnibus
    COLLECTING: UNCANNY X-MEN 97-105, 107-108, 125-138; PHOENIX: THE UNTOLD STORY 1; MATERIAL FROM CLASSIC X-MEN 6, 8, 13, 18, 24, 43; BIZARRE ADVENTURES 27, WHAT IF? (1977) 27

    ----------------------------------------------------

    -X-Men: Revolution
    COLLECTING: UNCANNY X-MEN 381-389; X-MEN 100-109, ANNUAL 2000; X-MEN UNLIMITED 27-29; X-MEN: BLACK SUN 1-5; BISHOP: THE LAST X-MAN 15-16; CABLE 87

    ---------------------------------------------------

IMO the Phoenix Omnibus is a duplicate for people like me who already have Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol 1 and Vol 2; the Classic X-Men Omnibus will also contain the same materials from this collection (I will buy this one two, is a must have for me).

Of interest is the fact that they will publish in Omni the brief return of Claremont to X-Men... while it is not the best of his work I will buy it for sure.

What are your thoughts on this? will you incorporate those 3 Omnis into your list in this page?

    Cheers,
    Enrique

    1. Chris and Enis -- I do intend to update the above to reflect the X-MEN: REVOLUTIONS BY CHRIS CLAREMONT OMNIBUS. I'm honestly kind of surprised that run is getting Omnibus treatment rather than a couple of thick "Epic Collection" style trade paperbacks, but I do intend to pick it up. I barely remember that era, other than that I wasn't a huge fan following from the Alan Davis run (which I loved and wish would've gotten an Omnibus nod of its own ahead of this one).

I have the X-MEN CLASSIC OMNIBUS ordered and I think it will arrive within a week or two. I'll try to put up a full review of it at some point, though possibly not until January. Since the above list is just the two ongoing core X-titles, I'm not sure it would fit, but maybe I'll try to find an "honorary mention" slot for it, since I know people love that material.

As for the DARK PHOENIX SAGA OMNIBUS, I don't really have any interest in that one. It's great for people who just want all the Phoenix stuff in one handy hardcover, and I understand it's being released to tie in with the next X-Men movie, but it just covers chunks of issues that are already available in multiple formats that I consider superior due to their completeness.

Still next year looks to be a great one for vintage X-Men collections! We have the REVOLUTIONS and DARK PHOENIX Omnibuses, plus the LEGION QUEST hardcover, as well as the X-MEN BLUE and GOLD vol. 0 books collecting most of the Seagle/Kelly stuff, all due in 2018. It's nice to see such a wealth of X-Material on the way after a few years of pretty sparse releases.

      Delete
  30. Okay, the charts above are updated to reflect the upcoming X-MEN: REVOLUTION OMNIBUS, along with a special note about the CLASSIC X-MEN OMNIBUS below the first UNCANNY chart.

Crazy to note that, if you include a couple of out-of-print books in the tally, Marvel has collected the entire post-Lobdell/pre-Morrison run of both X-MEN and UNCANNY except for just four issues of each! That's an era I tend to write off as sub-par and/or unmemorable (aside from the all too brief Alan Davis run), yet it's nearly complete in reprints!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for the update Matt! the list is becoming more complete each year.

I really hope that Marvel puts more emphasis on completing in Omnibus the Claremont Saga between Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol 3 and X-MEN: MUTANT MASSACRE HC... also they need to hardcover the issues between Mutant Massacre and FALL OF THE MUTANTS... Hopefully they re start with that next year in Summer or so

  32. Thanks for this page, it's really useful :) I'd like to suggest an edit after I got pretty confused while reading through the collections. There are some huge things that happen in the X-Men: Phoenix Rising collection (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29979798-x-men) that occur in the middle of the Ghosts collection, after Uncanny X-Men 201. You start seeing Jean around the place and have no idea where she came from. I'd put that in here somewhere

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, Subjunk -- I don't have PHOENIX RISING up above since my list covers pretty much only UNCANNY X-MEN and X-MEN issues, and the PHOENIX RISING book is comprised of the AVENGERS, FANTASTIC FOUR, and X-FACTOR issues where Jean comes back. Though, were one to read it with the above, I think the simplest spot would be to set aside GHOSTS after issue 201, read PHOENIX RISING, and then return to GHOSTS.

    2. Thanks for your kind words! I would be really interested for your input on it. The basic idea is to include all Uncanny X-Men comics and the major tie-ins, relying on the collections to be the source of the tie-ins.

  34. ok guys, trying to figure out what to do. I have all the Marvel Masterworks in Hardcover through Vol 9 (I think), but I want to downsize as they take up a lot of room. They discontinued the MM TPB, and with the EPICs, they are just getting started. The Uncanny Omnibus are in print, but the 1-66 issues aren't. What are you all thinking about when trying to be consistent with collected volumes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, Todd -- Personally, I think if you have the patience and since you've indicated a willingness to "downgrade" from hardcover to paperback, the Epic Collections are the way to go at this point. One Epic is about the same size as a Masterworks hardcover, but it covers way more issues (example, the SECOND GENESIS Epic contains the full contents of UXM Masterworks vols. 1 - 2) -- plus the Epic seem to be more comprehensive than other formats (again using SECOND GENESIS as an example, it includes issues of IRON FIST and MARVEL TEAM-UP that aren't in the Mastworks or even the Omnibuses).

Only problem is, as you noted, there's not a ton of X-Men in Epic format yet, and it will likely take them years to catch up with the Masterworks.

Alternatively, you could grab UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS vol. 1 - 3 and then wait for issues 1 - 66 to hit the Epics, if you're not concerned about mixing and matching formats. Issues 1 - 45 are already in Epics, in fact, so one more volume should finish that run. For me personally, that would likely be the way to go since I love the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne/Smith stuff and it looks great in the oversized Omnibus format -- while the pre-Claremont material doesn't do much for me.

Lastly, if you really want to save some space and if you have a decent tablet, digital is always an option. Marvel Masterworks volumes are very reasonably priced on Amazon (only $8.50 each and they dip much lower during sales). They take up no physical space whatsoever (obviously), you can read them in either the Kindle app, Comixology app, or Marvel app, and they're always in the cloud whenever you want them. Much as I love all my physical books, I'm becoming more and more enamored with digital lately.

      Delete
    2. Matt- thanks. You confirmed what I was thinking. I am fairly confident that the final third classic X-Men will be in an epic at some point since they were in vol 5 and 6 of the Masterworks TPB only a few years ago.

I considered the omnibus, but when vol 3 only had 22 core issues (154-175) for the cost, I can't do it. I can't do digital; as much as I want to read it all, I just can't.

I'm just hopeful that they keep up with the Epics.

      Delete
    3. Just as a follow-up, there is an Amazon listing for the Epic that will cover the final third of the first 66 issues; it has a late November street date. Now it will be possible to have issues 1-66 in a decent size format.

  35. Hey Matt, I just saw the following from the Marvel Solicitations for May 2018!

X-MEN: THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS & PHOENIX HC

    Collecting: X-MEN (1991) #26-35, AVENGERS (1963) #368-369, AVENGERS WEST COAST #101, UNCANNY X-MEN (1981) #307-310, CABLE (1993) #6-8, X-MEN UNLIMITED (1993) #3, UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL (1992) #18, X-MEN: THE WEDDING ALBUM, WHAT IF? (1989) #60, ADVENTURES OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX #1-4 and material from MARVEL VALENTINE SPECIAL.

It collects the gap, X-Men #31-35! And it's an oversized HC! Awesome!!

    Replies
    1. Holy cow! I hadn't had a chance to look at the solicits yet. Thanks, Jacob! At a quick glance, it looks like this renders both the old WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX and AVENGERS/X-MEN: BLOODTIES books obsolete, and it has more stuff to boot. I'll need to update the chart again when I have a moment.

It looks like, between this and the soon-to-arrive LEGION QUEST book, we'll have oversized hardcover editions of every issue of UNCANNY from 220 through 321. That's pretty cool (and if it weren't for the uncollected gap of issues 215 - 219, that would've been UNCANNY 210 - 321 in OHC).

Also notable is that X-MEN 1 - 16 and 25 - 41 are all in oversized hardcover as well, which is pretty cool. Only 17 - 24, the contents of A SKINNING OF SOULS, are paperback.

Given that Marvel has "upgraded" THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX like this, I wonder if all the ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT stuff will ever be reprinted in one big Omnibus? I may be nuts, but I'd totally buy that even though I own the trades.

Anyway, thrilled to see that little X-MEN 31 - 35 gap plugged. Now we just need three issues of UNCANNY and four issues of X-MEN to complete my goal, the full Scott Lobdell/Fabian Nicieza era, in collected editions. And I still think all those issues together would be just right for an ONSLAUGHT AFTERMATH trade paperback...

      Delete
    2. Further thought: The X-Men are getting a LOT of reprint love this year for some reason! We have two trades for the Joe Kelly and Steve Seagle run coming up soon, LEGION QUEST in hardcover within the next month or two, REVOLUTION BY CHRIS CLAREMONT OMNIBUS this summer, and now THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX in oversize hardcover coming up too! I wonder what brought this on? (Not that I'm complaining!)

And further -- with all these books coming, the Lobdell run is nearly complete as noted above, and we'll see the Seagle/Kelly run that followed him completed too, plus the full Claremont run from 2000 in one book. A chunk of Alan Davis's run, which sits between Seagle/Kelly and Claremont, was collected in trades, but that was years ago. The time is ripe, I say, for an X-MEN BY ALAN DAVIS OMNIBUS covering that 1999 run. Hopefully we see that too, within the next year or two. I loved those issues as they were coming out.

In any case, it astounds me that, by the end of the year, the entire decade of the nineties for both X-MEN and UNCANNY X-MEN will be collected, aside from only about twenty or so issues (most of which are in the Alan Davis run).

    3. This is really cool! I've entered this new collection into TimelineTools at https://cdn.rawgit.com/SubJunk/TimelineTools/master/index.html#!?id=AvengersVol1368

      It replaced:

Avengers/X-Men: Bloodties (except Black Knight: Exodus)
X-Men: The Wedding of Cyclops and Phoenix TPB (except X-Men Vol. 2 Annual #2)
Deadpool & X-Force Omnibus (the Cable issues)
X-Men: The Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix TPB
      and picks up uncollected issues

      Delete
    4. Thanks for the info, Subjunk! I knew BLACK KNIGHT: EXODUS would be "orphaned" by this book, but it's more an Avengers story anyway, so that makes sense. I forgot about X-MEN ANNUAL #2, though. Based on Marvel omitting it from this new collection, I can't help wondering if we might see the contents of A SKINNING OF SOULS repackaged with that annual and probably some other specials, one-shots, mini-series, or whatever from the same period in a hardcover someday. Maybe something like a FATAL ATTRACTIONS PROLOGUE collection.

It should be noted that this doesn't fully replace the more recent printing of THE ADVENTURES OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX, though. That 2014 book included the ASKANI'SON and X-MEN: PHOENIX mini-series, as well as a one-shot called BOOKS OF ASKANI, in addition to the first mini-series.

By the way, your timeline looks amazing! Even better and more detailed than the last time I took a look. When I update the chart to include the new book, would you mind if I add a link to it?

      Delete
  36. Hi Matt, yes you're right about The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix collection, I forgot about those. The remaining books from that are in the timeline too at https://cdn.rawgit.com/SubJunk/TimelineTools/master/index.html#!?id=XMenBooksofAskaniVol11
They aren't necessarily ordered by internal chronology yet though; when using the arrow keys or arrow buttons on the page, the idea is that you are taken to the next story in the internal chronology, which means you jump around from collection to collection a lot in the 90's. I've been using your blog as a reference for the order of the issues within collections, and the following page for the order of issues in the internal chronology http://www.comicsbackissues.com/comic-book-reading-order/x-men-read-order-chronology/

I've also left in X-Men Annual #2 because I think it adds something interesting to the Legacy virus story. Yes it would be an honor for it to be linked from here, thanks! You were right about the 90's being crazy, I can add 3 new collections and it just grows vertically and barely horizontally.

  41. Okay, there are finally listings on Amazon, so the chart has been updated to replace the old MUTANT MASSACRE hardcover with the upcoming Omnibus, and the old WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX paperback with the upcoming hardcover.

This is really pretty remarkable: we now have four oversized X-Men hardcovers coming this year, plus the two Seagle/Kelly trades this month. I would almost assume Marvel went for this big X-push because they knew about the Disney/Fox deal in advance, but from what I've read, nobody -- not even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige -- was aware until it happened.

But in any case, at this rate I would honestly be shocked if we don't see those last three UNCANNY and last four X-MEN issues from the 90s collected by end of 2019. This is a pretty exciting time to be a fan of vintage X-material!

  42. Whoa! There's an X-MEN: MAGNETO WAR trade paperback coming late this year, too. It'll plug the little gaps in the Alan Davis run, too. Still wishing for an Omnibus of that full era, but this is a nice start. Though I'd love to see them consolidate all the older collections from the Davis run (THE SHATTERING, VS. APOCALYPSE vol. 1 & 2, and POWERLESS) into one single thick trade to sit alongside MAGNETO WAR, at the very least.

Perhaps Vol. 12 will cover Uncanny X-Men #194 to #198 or #199, such that it can include New Mutants Special Edition #1 & Uncanny X-Men Annual #9 (the second half of X-MEN: THE ASGARDIAN WARS; it's my understanding that the second half takes place between Uncanny X-Men #199 and #200).

I'm hoping they combine Masterworks Vol. 10, 11, and 12 into an Omnibus (called "Uncanny X-Men by Claremont & Romita Jr. Omnibus" instead of "Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 4") and then do an OHC covering the relevant material from X-MEN: GHOSTS and X-FACTOR EPIC COLLECTION: GENESIS & APOCALYPSE (i.e. the same format as X-MEN: INFERNO PROLOGUE OHC).

Those are my thoughts on covering the gap in oversized format between UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 3 and X-MEN: MUTANT MASSACRE OMNIBUS. What do you think Matt? Thanks!

    1. Also, I was curious. Do you have any interest in charting/listing all the Uncanny X-Men annuals and X-Men annuals? I just noticed that, as per your chart, you haven't accounted for Uncanny X-Men Annual #9 (part of X-MEN: THE ASGARDIAN WARS).

      Thanks!

    2. At the rate they've been going, it seems likely we will see the next UNCANNY Masterworks in a couple years. I agree; once it's published, an Omnibus of the Claremont/Romita Jr. run would be great. I suspect they will go ahead and call it vol. 4, but I guess we'll have to wait to find out for sure.

That said, while I think the Romita Jr. era is okay, I'm not a massive fan of it, so I'm okay with my THE GIFT Epic Collection and GHOSTS to fill that run, along with the eventual Epic Collection covering the stuff that's in UNCANNY Masterworks vol. 10. I actually haven't bought that one in physical format, though I do own it digitally.

I might put the annuals up there someday... I hadn't really thought about it, but I suppose they do sort of count as part of the main series even though they're somewhat separate.

  49. Awesome list this is just what I've been looking for, thank you. Is there an alternative to the Claremont/Lee omnibus's? Those things are way out of my price range, I wound up ordering the paperback collections for Inferno for the same reason.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello! At present there's nothing that fully collects the contents of the Claremont/Lee Omnibuses, though bits and pieces have popped up elsewhere. The largest chunk is in X-MEN EPIC COLLECTION: MUTANT GENESIS. Presumably, future Epic Collections will continue to fill in the gaps between the INFERNO trades and MUTANT GENESIS.

The MUTANT GENESIS book ends with X-MEN #3, so there's some subsequent Jim Lee issues as well. Those might be easier to find in older printings of the MUTANT GENESIS trade paperback (though that trade used to end with X-MEN #8, as I recall, leaving Lee's final three issues still unreprinted in paperback.

This is all to the best of my knowledge, of course; it's possible I've missed or forgotten something, but I hope it's of some help!

    2. Thanks for the reply. I really want those omnibus's so what I think I'll do is just be patient and wait for prices I'm comfortable with. I only recently started collecting trades anyway, no need to buy everything at once like a maniac.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, if you can find them for a reasonable price, those Omnibuses are well worth the price. They're beautiful books. It's also possible that Marvel could reissue them someday. They do go back to press on Omnibuses now and then, so it could happen.

  50. A ghost listing for an X-MEN: EVE OF DESTRUCTION hardcover has appeared on the Hachette Books website, so it looks like the long out-of-print UNCANNY 391-393 and X-MEN 111-113 will be available next summer. Further, one of Marvel's collected edition gurus, Jeph York, posted some time ago that the following issues would likely appear in such a book as well:

    UNCANNY X-MEN #390
    X-MEN #310
    UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL 2000
    X-MEN: DECLASSIFIED #1
    MAGNETO: DARK SEDUCTION #1-4
X-MEN: THE SEARCH FOR CYCLOPS #1-4
    X-MEN UNLIMITED #30-31
    X-MEN: MAGIK #1-4

So that would pretty much finish everything off up to the point Grant Morrison and Joe Casey came aboard. (Which is my absolute, drop-dead stopping point for X-Men reprints. I'll be happy to never read their stuff again!)

    1. Actually, I believe all of NEW MUTANTS is collected at this point, between the NEW MUTANTS CLASSIC trade paperbacks, the Epic Collections, and a few crossover collections. I'm less versed on X-FACTOR, but your assessment of the first forty issues being collected sounds about right between Epic Collections and crossover books.

However, as I've never been a huge fan of those titles, I haven't paid much attention to their collected edition status. It's nice when the ancillary series get collected, but by interest is really just in the core X-MEN and UNCANNY X-MEN titles. Thank you for the interest, though!

    2. I think your assumption of UXM176-198 sounds correct... and then an Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol 5 will be announced maybe for 2021? I think that one will have UXM199-209 and other issues... I would love that Vol 4 could contain UXM176-209 but that would be too much material and based on the way they handled previous volumes I think that would leave out a lot of minis like Asgardian Wars or FF vs X-men... hopefully Omar's Channel can have soon the contents

      Delete
    3. So far, the omnis have mapped to the equivalent of three of the Masterworks. If that pattern holds then Omnibus 4 would include MMW 10-12 (176-200, Annuals, plus the Kitty & Wolverine, X-Men/Alpha Flight and Nightcrawler minis.)

  63. Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 4 Contains:
    UXM#176-193 + Annual #8, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine #1-6, X-Men & Alpha Flight 1-2

I'm Speculating that whatever it's called (Omni #5/X-Men Phoenix Rebirth or Road to Mutant Massacre it will contain:

    UXM#194-209 + Annual #9-10, Nightcrawler (1985)#1-4, Avengers #263, FF #286, X-Factor #1-8 + Annual #1

  64. Hey, gang -- I kind of fell down on the job updating the chart recently. I just modified it to include UXM OMNIBUS 4 and THE TWELVE OMNIBUS.

(I also removed the four long out-of-print paperbacks that THE TWELVE supplanted: THE SHATTERING, VS. APOCALYPSE vols. 1 & 2, and POWERLESS.)

Hopefully they'll find a way to turn MAGNETO WAR into an OHC at some point too. I'm sure there's some more stuff from that era they could throw in to fill it out. The X-MEN: LIBERATORS mini-series comes to mind, and there are probably some uncollected X-MEN UNLIMITED issues that they could stick in there, too. I'd love to have that full year-long Alan Davis run in two OHCs on the bookcase.

But first I'd like to see all three ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT books repackaged into one OHC, followed by ONSLAUGHT AFTERMATH and TRIAL OF GAMBIT getting combined for the same treatment. (I know, I have a problem...)

    2. You certainly do NOT have a problem Matt. Mapping out comic book collections is what I do in my head on a daily basis!

I feel like a "Road to Onslaught" omnibus (collecting all 3 previous trades) is the next one on the horizon...maybe early 2022...I'm hoping.

Are you getting the New Mutants and Excalibur Omnis that have been coming out recently Matt?
Vol. 2 for both titles are scheduled to come out at the end of this year!!!

      Jacob.

    3. Hi Jacob -- I did not get the NEW MUTANTS or EXCALIBUR Omnibuses. I have all that material in trade paperback, and those series just aren't as dear to me as UNCANNY and X-MEN, so I don't really think I need them in OHC.

I'm happy they were made, though, because seeing ancillary X-series get collected gives me hope that we may someday see a GENERATION X Omnibus!

Also, thanks for the validation! Sometimes I feel dumb for re-buying certain material, but I tend to look at paperbacks as "placeholders" until a hardcover comes along, and also as "insurance" in case the HC never actually materializes!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I believe that's correct. The AoA Omnibus collects only the bare-bones "Legion Quest" crossover -- the two issues of X-MEN and UNCANNY, and one issue of CABLE.

I recall that when the book was originally solicited, it didn't even have those; but had the X-MEN CHRONICLES (and maybe X-UNIVERSE) issues instead. Fans convinced Marvel that the Legion Quest issues would be more valuable to the reading experience.

Of course, if they'd known they were eventually going to do an entire LEGION QUEST hardcover at some point, they might've mapped the AoA book differently!

  67. I'm not sure if annuals are an integral part of the list, but UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL (1970) #14 is collected on X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST OHC, taking place right before THE EXTINCTION AGENDA.

I'm so curious how they're going to collect it/map it out.
My "X-Men in oversized format" collection won't feel complete until they collect those Uncanny X-Men annuals!

    1. I will always be annoyed that "Days of Future Present" wasn't in the Claremont/Lee Omnibuses. It's in the DAYS OF FUTURE PAST OMNIBUS, but that collects a bunch of other random stuff I don't need or already have, and I'm not buying it for four annuals.

I have no interest in re-buying the Claremont/Lee books either if they get repackaged to include that storyline -- and the fact that they were reissues recently makes me think Marvel probably has no plans to do that anyway.

"Future Present" could go into a revised X-TINCTION AGENDA book, though. The original volume the first Genosha storyline from UNCANNY's 230s, plus the nine-part crossover. An updated volume could dump the Genosha issues since they're in INFERNO PROLOGUE now, and replace them with the annuals. That, I might get.

  70. Wow, Matt, that's impressive. I just missed out on the Inferno Omnibus. I couldn't tell if the whole thing was all in chronological order or if the crossovers just got put in the back of the book. As I already own the three trades I just couldn't pull the trigger without knowing.

It irks me to no end that, despite post "Mutant Genesis" Wolverine, X-Factor and X-Force being collected in Epic format, there are no X-Men Epic Collections past X-Men #3. The Epic trades are my preferred reading format. It's also disappointing that the upcoming Generation X Epic Collection has Uncanny X-Men #316 & 317 but not #318. First world problems I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks, Drew! I'm not sure how they laid out the INFERNO OMNIBUS. I think it would make sense to put the crossovers in the back, and there's precedent for that. I believe that's how Marvel has done the crossovers attached to INFINITY GAUNTLET and its sequels in those Omnibuses.

I've often wondered if Marvel has any plans to ever do X-Men Epics beyond X-MEN #3. There are so many hardcovers and trades covering that period that it might be redundant. It would be nice, though, as long as they kept it going with both UNCANNY and X-MEN. While you could read one title without the other in the 90s and not feel totally lost (which I did for my first couple years as an X-fan, reading only X-MEN and not UNCANNY), the two definitely fed off of one another to an extent that it would feel weird to not have them collected in a chronological reading order in a single series.

As for GENERATION X -- Marvel has a weird history collecting (or not collecting) UNCANNY 318. They left it out of the original PHALANX COVENANT hardcover from 2014, which seemed absurd to me since it's basically a coda to the story. Put it this way: Marvel includes UNCANNY 297 in all collections of "X-Cutioner's Song" these days, because even though it's not a formal part of the story, it's the "quiet issue" afterword to the whole thing. UNCANNY 318 serves the same purpose for "Phalanx".

The GENERATION X CLASSIC vol. 1 trade did include UNCANNY 318, though, because I guess Marvel viewed it more as a prologue to GEN X than an epilogue to "Phalanx" (while I think it's both).

I will say, though, that I just looked up the GENERATION X EPIC COLLECTION and it appears the solicit has been revised to include UNCANNY 318 after all -- so I think it should be good!

  73. Hey Mat,do you think Marvel is gonna reprint or release a new revised fall of the mutants HC,Fatal attractions HC,X-Cutioner Song HC and X-men Revolution Omnibus?

Or do I try my hand at the second market?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Marvel has been really generous with new books, uogrades and reprints recemtly especially for X-related properties. We've now got one gap of material not collected in OHC or Omni from 1963-1995. Look at Inferno and Cpt Britain too, Fall of the Mutants will be likely reprinted as an omni and it's only a matter of time. Uncanny Omar from the Near Mint Condititon Youtube has strong links with the reprints team at Marvel and Fall of the Mutants/Uncanny Vol 5 are always near the top of his surveys.

      Delete
    2. As a matter of fact, I believe Omar recently confirmed a FALL OF THE MUTANTS OMNIBUS for next year. His info is pretty much always accurate. So I think we can count on that.

This seems to be Marvel’s strategy in recent years: they will reissue and/or expand/combine books previously done in oversized hardcover format as Omnibuses. Like Alex said, they did it with INFERNO (and also MUTANT MASSACRE).

Based on that. I can easily see an Omnibus for FATAL ATTRACTIONS. X-CUTIONER’S SONG is an interesting one, because it’s very short for an Omnibus. There’s a theory of thought that it could be combined with the also-out-of-print BISHOP’S CROSSING OHC for a single Omninus. I could see that happening.

(Heck, I don’t know how big it would be, but I’d like to see a MUTANT GENESIS OMNIBUS collecting X-MEN #1 and UNCANNY #281 through “X-Cutioner’s Song”. It would duplicate a lot of the contents of the second CLAREMONT/LEE OMNIBUS, but it would be a nice package collecting that whole era.)

If the demand is there, REVOLUTION will probably get a reprint someday. Marvel isn’t shy about reprinting (and re-reprinting) Omnibuses when they know people want them. It just takes a number of years sometimes!

    3. Thank you for your insights,Matt and Alex.It was much appreciated.Especailly the news that Fall Of The Muntants Omnibus might be coming next year. That got me excited.

I would really love to see Marvel do a Fatal Attractions Omnibus. Its the best Magneto and 90's X-men story for me and I loved how it spread across all the great titles.

Demand is what worries me for Revolution, because that story isn't beloved by most fans.Even I'm getting it mostly to fill in the gap in my collection.Though if Marvel ever decided to reprint Revolution, they should include the aftermath of Dream's End.Its silly that they didn't include it in the original Omnibus release.

    1. Personally, I mix the OHCs and Omnibuses on my bookcase. However I don't mix in trade paperbacks; they're on a separate shelf.

      My bookcase goes:

      X-Men Shelf 1:
      UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS 1 - 4
      X-MEN: ASGARDIAN WARS OHC
      MUTANT MASSACRE OMNIBUS
      FALL OF THE MUTANTS OHC
      INFERNO PROLOGUE OHC
      INFERNO OHC
X-MEN by CLAREMONT & LEE vol. 1 OMNIBUS
      X-TINCTION AGENDA OHC
X-MEN by CLAREMONT & LEE vol. 2 OMNIBUS

      X-Men Shelf 2:
      BISHOP'S CROSSING OHC
      X-CUTIONER'S SONG OHC
      SHATTERSHOT OHC
      FATAL ATTRACTIONS OHC
THE WEDDING OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX OHC
      PHALANX COVENANT OHC
      LEGIONQUEST OHC
      AGE OF APOCALYPSE OMNIBUS
      ONSLAUGHT OMNIBUS
      THE TWELVE OMNIBUS
      REVOLUTION OMNIBUS
      EVE OF DESTRUCTION OMNIBUS

      X-Men Shelf 3:
CLASSIC X-MEN OMNIBUS (because it doesn't fit with all the other hardcovers)
      EPIC COLLECTION: THE GIFT TPB
      GHOSTS TPB
THE ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT vol. 1 - 3 TPBs
      ONSLAUGHT AFTERMATH TPB
      THE TRIAL OF GAMBIT TPB
      X-MEN BLUE: REUNION TPB
      X-MEN GOLD: HOMECOMING TPB
THE HUNT FOR PROFESSOR X TPB
      MAGNETO WAR TPB
(Plus some other random X-TPBs like GENERATION X CLASSIC, GAMBIT CLASSIC, ADVENTURES OF CYCLOPS AND PHOENIX, and so forth.)

So for the volumes where there's one or two stray issues out of chonological order, I stick them where the larger body of contents would go (i.e., the PHALANX COVENANT book contains an issue of UNCANNY that actually takes place during "Fatal Attractions", but I keep where the "Phalanx Covenant crossover proper would fit in continuity).

  75. Finally the gap is closed, Uncanny Omar just announced:
    Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol 5:
    -Uncanny X-Men #194-209
    -Uncanny X-Men Annual #9
    -New Mutants Special Edition
    -Nightcrawler #1-4
    -Longshot #1-6
-Marvel Fanfare #33 (X-men material only)

with this we have all Uncanny X-Men in oversized HC format from issue 1 thru 321!!!

Now let's wait for the Road to Onslaught Omnibus to have all issues up to #333

    1. Thank you, Kike! I hadn't seen this annoucement yet. Excellent news! And I agree, I'd love to see the three ROAD TO ONSLAUGHT books repackaged as an Omnibus. Followed by an OPERATION: ZERO TOLERANCE Omnibus collecting the contents of the trade of the same name, the TRIAL OF GAMBIT trade, and the old ZERO TOLERANCE OHC.

    2. Sure thing Matt!
What are your thoughts on the way Marvel is going to handle the Omnibus line starting on vol 6?
Omar said they have planned and already mapped Volumes 6 and 7 with only Uncanny X-Men issues and leaving out the tie ins for Mutant Massacre and I guess they will do the same for the next crossovers fall of the mutants, inferno, etc.
With this there is going to be a lot of double dip for the folks like me that already have all the OHCs up to Jim lee omnis and further. (as I assume they will include issues not contained in the event Omnis to make them desirable).

Me on my side, I will not be buying vols 6, 7, 8, etc until they reach post Age of Apocalypse Omnis or post Onslaught Omni.

    3. I've seen a ton of complaining about this book lacking the early X-FACTOR issues, and I don't get it. It's an UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS. None of the prior UXM books included, say, issues of NEW MUTANTS -- so why would anybody expect this one to contain several issues of X-FACTOR?

It's really just people annoyed at a hole they expected, for no real logical reason, to be plugged by this book. Marvel has said for several years that the numbered series Omnibuses and the event books are two separate lines. This is where we finally see that notion in practice. I imagine someday there will be something like a MUTANT MASSACRE PROLOGUE OHC collecting the X-FACTOR issues with the UNCANNY issues.

The missing annuals likewise unfortunately make sense, given both were published originally after the contents of this book. They shouldn't be here. However I would argue that both should've been in the MUTANT MASSACRE OMNIBUS, or at least 10 should've been there and 11 should've been in the FALL OF THE MUTANTS OMNIBUS.

If UXM OMNIBUS 6 includes both those annuals, I might pick it up to replace the MUTANT MASSACRE OMNIBUS (or sit alongside it depending on lack of overlap) on my shelf. But otherwise, I don't see myself getting further numbered UXM Omnis. I'll be content enough with vols 1 - 5, followed by all the event books, Claremont/Lee 1 & 2, etc.

  76. I am frustrated that they aren't collecting X-Factor 1-9 and the FF/Avengers issue where Jean returns in Vol 5. Pretty sure UXM annual 10 is in the New Mutants Vol 2 omni so a bit of a slap in the face to people who have collected the event omnis. I personally wont be buying Vol 6-8+ as I don't feel the need to double dip and the content is often meaningless without X-Factor, New Mutants etc.

  77. I see what you are both saying Matt and Alex and understand both points of view.

I think the vol 5 will be my last numbered UXM omni until they reach (maybe in ...10 years?) the UXM issues after Age of Apocalypse... but I would really like if they give us an OHC called X-Factor Origins including X-Factor 1-9, and the FF/Avengers issues... we have X-Factor#9-40 in all the crossovers Omnis so we just need those first 8 issues in oversized format... it would be a slap in the face of the fans if Marvel just publishes an X-Factor Omnibus with issues #1-40... that would be a lot of double dipping and shelf space.

Let's see how Marvel handles this.

For the UXM annual 10 they are collected in the New Mutants Omnibus vol 2 which I already own so it would be that much of an issue to me.

  78. it would not be* that much of an issue to me.

  79. Hi Matt, I'm not sure if you're updating the table anymore but Uncanny omnibus volume five was just released which replaces the Gift and Ghosts paperbacks. We've got everything through the Age of Apocalypse in omnibus or OHC format now.
