NOTE

To combat those threats which no single hero can stand against, Earth's Mightiest Heroes have forged a covenant to unite in battle for the protection of all mankind!
Here we have a run I "grew up with", but somehow had never actually read. This group was "my" Avengers team when I was around twelve to fourteen years old, and they have always held a great soft spot in my heart even though I knew very little of their saga. So, armed with 2021's AVENGERS: THE GATHERING OMNIBUS, plus a few other odds and ends, I decided to finally read up on the Avengers of the early nineties!

  1. I mentioned in posts on this series down the line a couple of earlier Avengers stories written by Harras, although they didn’t come in the Avengers series proper: First, Iron Man #178, dated Jan. 1984 (Assistant Editors’ Month), which has an 11-page tale of kids who patrol their neighborhood as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes; per a GCD search, it’s Harras’s first published comics writing beyond editorial text. Second, 1984’s Iron Man Annual #7, published smack in the middle of the debut West Coast Avengers miniseries, in which the former Power Man (and Smuggler, and the future Atlas) Erik Josten becomes Goliath.

Now I’ve belatedly read Avengers #280, a fill-in near the end of Roger Stern’s 1983-1987 run, which turns out to be Harras’s first and only writing credit on the main title before what you cover, spotlighting Jarvis while he recuperates from the savage beating he endured in the Masters of Evil’s siege of Avengers Mansion… and it’s excellent for its character insights and sensible retcon bits, in particular the betrayal of the Avengers by Jarvis back in #54-55 that’s always been hard for me to swallow.

I figured that mentioning it here along with the above (reposted) info might be worthwhile should anyone visiting want to do a truly comprehensive Harras-on-Avengers read.

Thank you for filling in those blanks, Blam. I'll probably check them out at some point.
